Dearest Friends of The Stone Boat,
It was exactly one year ago today in a small village in northern Spain that I found myself standing in front of a building made of stone. I looked a long, long time at the faded sign in the window - ‘se vende’ … And then tuning out the voice that said ‘impossible’, I turned towards that old interior angel and she said without hesitation, go ahead, give them a call.
I will tell you that it has not always been smooth sailing. A Camino in its own right. A holy path filled with paperwork and permissions, dust and disappointments, aligning and re-aligning, mountains and miracles. And so, having come through all that - I stand here humbled, but with a full heart - six months behind schedule, snow in the forecast and ready to see who the Road brings to the door this winter. It is a unique privilege to be here and I feel this daily.
In gathering these photographs to share with you, I am overwhelmed by the beauty I see in these faces, hearts and bones of pilgrims on the Way to Santiago, and also in those who have so generously helped to create this space. There is a grace that is flowing to and through here, an alchemy of this long, strange and mysterious Road and those who travel it. I can feel the house is changed by each pilgrim who stays here, and from the feedback I have received, The Stone Boat has also been a meaningful stop along what can often be a quite difficult journey.
This has been possible because of your support, kindness and generosity. As a friend put it, he feels as if he has had his hand on an oar in the becoming of this little sanctuary called The Stone Boat. My sincere thanks and I look forward to seeing you walk through the doors one day.
PS. I will be mailing out the care packages in the next days from the original gofundme campaign. Thank you for your patience! If you have a poetry slate coming to you and you have not given me your request, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you have changed your mailing address or would like to confirm, please send me a note so I can make sure that your treasure can find you. I am also taking orders for slates and gift certificates from The Stone Boat for the holidays, send me a message if you have any questions.
